If you thought that only Beyonce with her smashing fragrance hit "Heat" ($400 million in revenue since its launch in 2010) has a business head over her luscious body you can think again. Her husband, rapper Jay Z, is just as business savvy, and to prove that beyond any doubt he is adding fragrance to his portfolio of ventures that include his fashion label Rocawar, his shareholding of the Brooklyn Nets basketball franchise and his company, Roc Nation Sports sports agents. A busy man, this new father of one! The couple together is worth a billion dollars according to the International Business Times, which makes them pop culture royalty.
"Gold Jay Z" is his first fragrance developed for men and composed with the help of Firmenich perfumer Ilias Ermenidis, but the company developing the brand is not the same one who develops the fragrance line for his wife, i.e. Coty. Maybe that's because the couple has the insight not to mix their affairs and because they have the business acumen to source their brand in a way that it looks as if they're on a different path, while actually being on the same.
Licensed with Parlux, which also develops fragrances for celebrities like Rihanna and Jessica Simpson, "Gold Jay Z" will be released on November 20 exclusively at Barneys New York, with a highly focused on social media web campaign to be held on Friday, November 29, the American "Black Friday" day of sales, to capture the Christmas market. The US distribution channel will expand to encompass 2000 outlets, but no plans for a European launch have been announced as yet.
